As the most common and mildest form of gum disease, gingivitis can cause irritation and inflammation of the gums. Most often caused by a build-up of plaque and hardened tartar, gingivitis is usually easily treatable if it is detected soon enough. Some signs to detect gingivitis are bad breath, red or swollen gums, pain in the gums, and bleeding when flossing or brushing. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to more serious and developed stages of gum disease. Therefore, if you think you may have gingivitis or a more serious case of gum disease, contact Dr. Neela Patel of Houston Heights Dentistry to schedule a dental exam. Our goal is to restore your oral health and protect your smile by detecting and treating the origin of the problem.
The irritation that accompanies gingivitis is typically due plaque and tartar buildup caused by poor dental hygiene. Plaque is a sticky bacterial film that covers the teeth and usually causes a yellow discoloration of the teeth. If the plaque is not removed, the disease may escalate into periodontitis or advanced periodontitis. Though it can usually be identified during a dental examination, some symptoms of gingivitis include, tender or swollen gums, separated gums, pain when chewing, bad breath, or pus in the gums.
What to Expect
Dr. Patel will inspect the teeth and gums during a dental exam before recommending treatment. Patients with gingivitis most often will need a more advanced dental cleaning to eliminate the plaque on the teeth. Other treatments and procedures may also need to be administered, such as dental crowns or dental bridges. Dr. Patel will consult with you about all procedures to be performed.
Following the dental cleaning and/or additional treatments, the gums may be sore for a day or so. It is essential that patients withhold a healthy oral hygiene routine to prevent future occurrences of gum disease. This includes flossing daily, and brushing twice a day.
A majority of insurance companies will cover gingivitis treatment, but our administrative team will work to confirm if there will be any additional costs. Prior to treatment, we will make sure you know your options for payment and financing.

"Best dentist ever. If you are looking for a new dentist - go here! Dr. Patel and her staff go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable, welcome, and taken care of. Dr. Patel is very personable and takes her time with you rather than just herding you thru. I have some allergies in which Dr. Patel took the time to do a ton of research to ensure I would be ok for a small procedure. They have one of the most kind and professional teams that I have encountered in a long time. I would highly recommend them without hesitation."- K.M. / Yelp / Oct 15, 2018
